Tour of California - Done and dusted!

Man, that was a tough week of racing! You could see in the peloton that there were a lot of guys suffering in the last few days of the tour. Even Lance Armstrong and Chris Horner were dropping back in the bunch on occasions due to how hard the Tour of California has been this year. The top of the leader board held steady though and yesterday’s final stage, whilst certainly tough, didn’t bring about any changes. 84 riders of the initial 136 starters made it to the conclusion in Escondido.

There were many battles each and every day as the whole peloton dealt with the severe weather conditions, sicknesses, lots of crashes and tough terrain which has put the TOC on the verge of being a little too hard for where it is on the racing calendar...... There were many battles each and every day as the whole peloton dealt with the severe weather conditions, sicknesses, lots of crashes and tough terrain which has put the TOC on the verge of being a little too hard for where it is on the racing calendar. But it seems that the grandeur of the event and it’s ever increasing popularity may see the race change it’s date on the calendar for 2010. But that is just speculation for the moment. Curtis, hard as nails, Gunn, finally succumbed to the knee injury that he has been riding with in the previous few stages and he was joined by many illustrious stars in withdrawing from the race, such as Carlos Sastre and Thor Hushovd. Team Fly V Australia certainly had a tour where everything was thrown at them.

In the end, 6 of us got sick and the other 2 had injuries to deal with. It was a tough opening for this fledgling team, but already there is talk about the future, about how mistakes will be corrected and how missed opportunities will be grasped. Team Fly V Australia will fight on and will be representing again very soon. All in all, we had a fairly successful tour taking into consideration our limited preparation. A few days in good breakaways with Dave Kemp and Curtis Gunn and two top 10 finishes for Bernie Sulzberger. And we will only go up from here. I am really excited about this project. In such a short space of time, the boys were able to receive the invite to California and now that that has been achieved, all the resources will be put into pushing the team towards some lofty goals.
