Tour of California Stage 5&6 - Get me a nurse!

Another tough couple of days to report on. Yesterday was the longest stage of the tour, a dead flat affair with about 7 corners in the space of 225km. Sitting for so long left me with a sore butt! We only 3 guys on this stage it was going to be hard for us to do much. Thankfully, gratefully, I have a BUT for you! Smoking Gunn started a breakaway that stayed away for 200km in another courageous ride by the old fella.

Tour of California Stage 7 - One to go!

The profile today was a long way up and then a long way down. Upon completing the down bit, we went about racing over 5 laps of a 7km circuit called the Rose Bowl. This place is famous but I have no idea why. What it impressed me with was the sheer magnitude of people out to watch the race.

It really was incredible. I have heard some big figures being bandied around, but I haven’t heard an accurate one. All I know is that on the 7km circuit, the crowd lined from 3 people deep to 10 deep! Incredible! I actually felt alright today, great considering yesterday I was throwing up. My legs felt better than they had all week and I was quite comfortable in a bunch that was doing 45km/h up a slight grade. A break of 10 riders went and that was enough for the majority of the teams in the race. Fly V Australia, down to only 2 riders, didn’t have a lot of say in the matter. Smoking Gunn had a tough ride to stay within contact of the bunch and make it to the finish inside the time limit as he has a fair bit of tendonitis going on with his knee. But enough about today’s racing.

It Continues - Stage 3

Just to prove to you all that it's raining a lot here, we woke up with 6cm of water flooding the hallway of our hotel. Frank Schleck apparently had no dry clothing today because of this...not to worry, it was raining!.... On the Rivet - Stage 4

Looking at today's stage profile, we were pretty eager to have a crack at getting in the early breakaway so that we could show our wares. Bernie and I were doing the best we could in picking the right move, but Astana weren't too keen on letting anything with much size go. Stuart O'Grady and another dude got away together at me stage and Astana and Saxo Bank spent the next half hour following the counter-attacks and then physically blocking the road so Boone else could move to the front. Way to go boys.... Looking at today's stage profile, we were pretty eager to have a crack at getting in the early breakaway so that we could show our wares.

A Great Day to be a Duck

It'a gonna be a fairly short one tonight. Today was what is described as the worst conditions possible. Still, better than a desk job!..... It'a gonna be a fairly short one tonight. Today was what is described as the worst conditions possible. Still, better than a desk job! (sorry!). Cold rain, cold wind and cold temperatures made today....cold. But on a bright note, my pet ducks at home would have been having a blinder! Have you ever shivered so much that your entire thoracic spine locks up because of all the tension? Well you know what I mean! Honestly, I'm a little out of practise at this (as also shown when I just couldn't go with 20 of a majority of the best cyclists I'm the world).
